Myspace Design Features

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Creating a MySpace website may seem overly complicated to those who have never done any HTML design in the past but it is really quite simple. Members who have advanced HTML knowledge can obviously incorporate more advanced features into their design but even those with no HTML knowledge may be able to create an attractive and functional MySpace website. This is possible because much of the design can be done through the use of templates. This article will focus on some of the most basic design features of MySpace to give beginners a basic understanding of the features they can incorporate into a new MySpace website and the types of changes which can be made to an existing website. This article will include information on changing the background, importing images, adding music to the website and posting quizzes for other users.

Adding or Changing the Background

The background color of a MySpace website is very important because it is one of the first things visitors notice when the website loads. If the background is garish and makes the website difficult to read, visitors may exit the page quickly. Conversely if the background is appealing it may make the entire website more appealing.

Basic HTML knowledge is required to add colors or background graphics to a MySpace profile. To add colors or background graphics go to the “Edit profile” section after logging into your account. Next enter the necessary code into the appropriate section. To get the background to appear on your profile you should include the code in the “About me” section of your account. If you are unsure of the code that is needed, there is a wealth of information available online for those who are learning HTML.

Importing Images

Many members of the MySpace community choose to post their picture on their website. Again the social aspects of the online community encourage this action because people who engage in online friendships often want to see what their new friends look like. Including pictures is the easiest way to let others know what you look like.

MySpace members are asked to upload a photo of themselves when they first sign up. This step can be skipped and done later. Photos which are uploaded to MySpace must be .gif or .jpg files. Additionally they must be smaller than 600k. The filename for photos should also not contain spaces or characters other than numbers or letters.

Adding Music to the Website

The addition of music to a MySpace website is a very common practice. This is used both by bands who want to promote their music as well as by individuals who want to let others know what type of music they like. The process of adding music to a MySpace website is incredibly easy. Members can visit the following web address to listen to music from MySpace artists: http://music.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=music. If the artist has granted permission for others to use the music, there will be a button that says “Add” next to the song. Clicking on this link, when you are logged into this account, will automatically add the music to the background of your MySpace website. You are only able to add one song at once to your profile but you can change the music as often as you like by adding a new song. If you already have one song and add another, the second song will replace the original song on your profile.

Posting Quizzes on the Website

Many MySpace members include fun personality quizzes on their website and publish their quiz results. These quizzes give visitors more information about the member. The members may also post a link to this quiz so other members can take the quiz and post their results in the comments page. Different types of personality quizzes can be found on the Internet and many of these quizzes give you the code necessary to add this quiz to your MySpace website or another websites. You can copy and paste the code into the “Interests” section of your MySpace profile.

How Web Crawlers Work

A web crawler (also known as a web spider or web robot) is a program or automated script which browses the internet seeking for web pages to process.

Many applications mostly search engines, crawl websites everyday in order to find up-to-date data.

Most of the web crawlers save a copy of the visited page so they could easily index it later and the rest crawl the pages for page search purposes only such as searching for emails ( for SPAM ).

How does it work?

A crawler needs a starting point which would be a web address, a URL.

In order to browse the internet we use the HTTP network protocol which allows us to talk to web servers and download or upload data from and to it.

The crawler browses this URL and then seeks for hyperlinks (A tag in the HTML language).

Then the crawler browses those links and moves on the same way.

Up to here it was the basic idea. Now, how we move on it completely depends on the purpose of the software itself.

If we only want to grab emails then we would search the text on each web page (including hyperlinks) and look for email addresses. This is the easiest type of software to develop.

Search engines are much more difficult to develop.

When building a search engine we need to take care of a few other things.

1. Size - Some web sites are very large and contain many directories and files. It may consume a lot of time harvesting all of the data.

2. Change Frequency - A web site may change very often even a few times a day. Pages can be deleted and added each day. We need to decide when to revisit each site and each page per site.

3. How do we process the HTML output? If we build a search engine we would want to understand the text rather than just treat it as plain text. We must tell the difference between a caption and a simple sentence. We must look for bold or italic text, font colors, font size, paragraphs and tables. This means we must know HTML very good and we need to parse it first. What we need for this task is a tool called “HTML TO XML Converters”. One can be found on my website. You can find it in the resource box or just go look for it in the Noviway website: www.Noviway.com.

That’s it for now. I hope you learned something.

Raiders Of The Lost Ark (DVD) Review

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

Nominated for eight Academy Awards including Best Picture, and winner of four Oscars, Raiders Of The Lost Ark is one of those rare commercial smash hits that also manages to win widespread critical acclaim from even the most hardened of reviewers. After all, any film directed by Steven Spielberg and written by George Lucas has to be an ingenious creation, right? In this case, absolutely. Not only is Raiders Of The Lost Ark one of the more memorable films in history, but its lead character Indiana Jones will go down in history as one of, if not the, most beloved hero in movie history…

Renowned archeologist and college history professor Indiana Jones (expert in recovering ancient objects) is approached by the United States government in regard to retrieving one of the greatest treasures in human history - the Ark of the Covenant. The government fears the Ark will fall into the wrong hands seeing as how Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich are feverishly searching for the Ark themselves…

With a hefty knowledge of the history involving the Ark, Jones sets out to borrow an amulet instrumental in the Ark’s discovery from family friend and ex-lover Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen). But the Nazis also seek the amulet, and Jones arrives just in the nick of time. Now Marion and Indiana will have to work together if they have any hope of saving the Ark from the evil clutches of the Nazi regime. In doing so, they encounter countless Nazis, booby traps, double-crossers, and the worst element of all - snakes…!

With an original score by John Williams (Jaws, Star Wars, Jurassic Park, etc.), the theme song from Raiders Of The Lost Ark may well be one of the most recognizable in the history of cinema. Williams’s genius is present throughout every scene of the film (which is one of Spielberg’s greatest triumphs - getting Hollywood to place greater emphasis on sound and music, i.e. emotion, the same as it does for dialogue, character, plot, etc.) Raiders Of The Lost Ark also features the underrated actress Karen Allen (Animal House, Scrooged, The Perfect Storm, etc.) whose career has spanned parts of four decades. In this film, she shines as the headstrong love interest of Indiana Jones…

Home to Harrison Ford’s breakout role, Raiders Of The Lost Ark features the up-and-coming Hollywood talent at his best. Although Star Wars placed Ford in the limelight, Raiders Of The Lost Ark puts Ford in the lead role - where he belongs. A likeable man, exhibiting unrivaled onscreen charisma, Harrison Ford adds the final touches of genius to a film that is as close to perfect as any movie can come. Don’t miss out on this first glimpse of Indiana Jones. A brilliant tale of heroism and adventure, Raiders Of The Lost Ark is a definite must-see movie.

The Best Alternative Arthritis Pain Reliever For You

Monday, April 21st, 2008

If you are fed up with your current arthritis medications, you may be looking for an alternative arthritis pain reliever. Because you need something that will ease your suffering and provide you relief from your incessant symptoms, you may need something that will speed the healing from this horrible health condition. That is something the current drug industry just cannot offer you, no matter how hard they try. The best bet at this point is to find an alternative arthritis pain reliever.

Many different quacks out there claim that they can give you a cure to help you deal with your rheumatoid arthritis or your osteoarthritis. The unfortunate truth, though, is that they just want to sell you a product so they can line their pockets with more money. You need a product that really works. You need something that has gone through drug trials and had research studies completed about it. You need something that will make a difference when you get out of bed each morning. You need honey bee venom treatments.

What Are Honey Bee Venom Treatments?

In countries that respect alternative medications, including alternative arthritis pain relievers, honey bee venom therapy has been used for years to treat lots of different conditions, including many forms of arthritis. At one time, it involved the process of placing an actual bee near the inflamed joint and having it sting the patient. Luckily now, though, the patient can just be injected with purified bee venom in the problem area. This alternative arthritis pain reliever contains phospholipase A and melittin which seems to stop the inflammation of most joints. The clinical trials for this alternative arthritis pain reliever show that it helps most suffers. Talk to your doctor before you begin this treatment, as it could be deadly if you are allergic to bee stings. For more alternative arthritis pain reliever products, visit some of the other articles on our website.

Basis Golf Etiquette

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

Golf is considered a gentleman’s game and since this is so, exact policy of etiquette in playing apply. Even though these are not hard and fast rules, they show that the person practicing these has respect not only for other golfers, but also for the game itself.

Here are just some general policies of golf etiquette practiced at all levels whether they’re amateur or professional. It is then followed by some certain rules at particular times throughout a game.

Quiet

- Keeping quiet as a person steps up to the ball is a sign of respect for the player as you are allow him/her to concentrate.

- A golf course is not a race track. Do not run as this will distract and bother other players.

Safety

- Before swinging, always check for other people or objects in the area your ball will be going. Others may not see you approaching with a shot. Make sure they are out of range..

- Similarly, it is not only unsafe to take practice swings in someone’s direction, it is also considered rude.

- Make sure people are not walking around before you swing and stand still when others are swinging.

Pacing

- When you and your group may not be the only players on a course, try to keep your pace of play at a rate that keeps up with the group ahead of you to avoid holding up the ones behind.

- It is very, very rude to advance into the group playing ahead of you. If it was accidental, you would have failed to observed safety etiquette. If it was intentional and you did so because they are playing slowly, it is still no reason to drive a ball in their direction.

- When you need to play through a group, observe common courtesy by first asking permission to do so. But before asking, make sure that the next hole is vacant so that there is enough space between groups as you pass through.

- If the group allows you to play through, take the least amount of time to finish the hole and move on to the next one as quickly as possible.

When on the teeing ground…

..try to stay out of the player’s line of sight as well as peripheral vision to allow him to concentrate. Standing behind him/her is the best way to do so, as well as keeping quiet as he/she prepares to swing.

When on the fairway…

..hitting some divots is perfectly fine, but avoid causing too many. Furthermore, try to put a few back in by simply stepping on the divot into the hole.

..don’t take too much time looking for a lost ball. The group behind you may not appreciate the delay. If it can’t be found within a few minutes, simply replace the ball.

When on the bunker…

..use the course-provided rake when you’ve finished with your shot to rake out marks left by you, your ball and your footprints, then leave the rake outside the bunker handle parallel to the fairway.

When on the green…

..avoid stepping on the ball paths of other players as this can affect the putt. Walk behind the ball on its direction to the hole or at least step over the imaginary line between the ball and the hole.

..repair ball marks made by the force of the ball landing on the green. This shows courtesy to the player following you as you’ve taken the time to leave them an unmarked green.

..put your ball back on the green before picking up the ball marker just so you can avoid possible points of contention between another player as to whether you’ve properly positioned your ball or not.

When at the practice grounds…

..continue to observe the general rules of golf etiquette as you would on the course.

Although these are not all of the good golfing etiquette practices, they are the basics you need to follow for each other’s safety and love of the game. This will keep the experience all the more pleasant for all concerned.

Real Estate Agent Marketing Tools

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

Real estate agent marketing tools to increase your commissions by 25% to 50% this year, interested?

I’ve concluded that 99% of real estate agents’ marketing tools are ineffective because they are you using A) “push marketing” B) not getting a tangible ROI in the name of “getting their name our there” (are advertising on benches???).

Furthermore, only 1% of real estate agents solve both of these challenges, not surprisingly they are also a part of the top 1% of commission earning agents. By the end of reading this real estate agent marketing tools article, you will have three simple tools for getting “qualified leads” and increasing your 25% to 50% in commissions this year.

SOLUTION: Internet Marketing for Real Estate Agents

Typical Internet Marketing for Real Estate Agent Approach:

WEBSITE + NO TRAFFIC = FANCY BROCHURE

Top 1% Internet Marketing for Real Estate Agent Approach:

WEBSITE + LOCAL GOOGLE + BIG ACTION = NEW BUSINESS

WEBSITE. If you have one, I’ll let you in on a little secret, it doesn’t matter what your website looks like (within reason), all that matters is getting “targeted local traffic” and having clearly defined “BIG actions” for successful real estate agent marketing tools.

NO WEBSITE. Before you hire anybody to design it, consult a website design company that specializes in real estate agents and internet marketing because they will be able to incorporate the next three solutions.

GOOGLE. What is it and why is it so important? Google is a search engine, where people search for websites, information, videos, etc. It’s important because “67% of U.S. adults use search engines as a research tool before making a purchase decision*.”

When potential clients (targeted traffic) search for the keyword “your city + real estate agent” (example, “Miami real estate agent”) wouldn’t it be great if they found your website? When your website appears, let me say “welcome to the 21st century of real estate agent marketing tools”.

(*iCrossing, “How America Searches: Online Shopping”, August 2005)

If you’re not found in Google™ for terms such as, “your city + real estate agent”, and within the first three pages of results, it’s like a selling a home without putting a “for sale” sign on the lawn or a listing on MLS, only a select few are going to know it’s for sale. Getting ranked in the first three pages doesn’t just happen, you need to incorporate two simple solutions: Google pay-per-click (PPC) advertising and search engine optimization (SEO).

SOLUTION #1: GOOGLE PAY-PER-CLICK (PPC) ADVERTISING.

Pay-per-click (PPC) is an online advertising format, where you buy web traffic that’s 100% customer targeted. Immediately (within minutes) after signing up with an account, your Ads will be placed on search engine result pages (SERP) for the searched “keywords” (phrases) relevant to your business.

The best part is that you only pay when someone clicks on your ad and not for the number of times (impressions) it appears on the screen. Secondly, because it’s a bidding system, you only pay as much as you want to, with no monthly minimum. To set-up a Google Adwords account go to: http://www.google.com/intl/en/ads/

SOLUTION #2: SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION.

Instead of paying for being in the “sponsored links” portion, you could appear in the natural (aka organic) portion of the search engine result page (SERP), internet marketers use a simple and powerful marketing concept called search engine optimization (SEO). There are two forms of SEO techniques, I only recommend using “white hat” (ethical) SEO. The other form called “black hat” SEO, will most likely get you banned from search engines and tarnish your brand image.

How to search engine optimize your website is well beyond the scope of this article, entire books have been written on the subject of SEO. I highly recommend Michael Wong’s “Search Engine Optimization Strategies” eBook.

SOLUTION #3: BIG ACTIONS.

What is the one action you want a first time visitor to take at your website? How are you going to get their email address or phone number?

A “BIG action” will answer both these questions. Here is a sample list of “BIG actions” for real estate agents’ websites:

– Call for a free “property consultation”
– Sign-up for new housing listings
– Sign-up for home buyer and seller education
– Sign-up for a free “current market assessment” (CMA)
– Sign-up for free virtual tours of property listings
– Sign-up for a free “property consultation”
– Sign-up for a free “first time home buyers” eBook

What your website’s “BIG actions” are, needs to be the #1 answered question. If you don’t know what your “BIG actions” are, then a first-time visitor to your website won’t know either. If you have a “BIG action” it also needs to be up front on your homepage and limited to a maximum of three “BIG actions”.

Define and implement up to three “BIG actions” today, get their email and follow-up with automated emails, and get them to call you or sign-up for a “property consultation”, it’s that simple.

Implement these three local real estate agent marketing solutions and become a seven or six figure commission earning agent today.

Mistakes Women Make With Their Online Dating Profile Photo

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

Millions of single women are making these online dating profile photo mistakes. Your photo is the most important part of your profile. Men are instantly attracted by the way a woman looks. If they don’t know what you look like, what do they have to be attracted to. It won’t be your user name if you have no visual stimulation.

The most common error on a single women’s profile photo is it’s taken from too far away. Usually these are holiday snaps where the woman is standing next to large rock or statue. There’s always something else to make them look even smaller in the photo. No one can see what they look like, all they see is the next photo.

Next common mistake is the photo is too dark. Most of the time this is due to too much light coming from behind you. With a combination of being too far away as well there was no point in uploading the photo in the first place. Men want to see you and you’re beauty.

This one is unbelievable. Single women actually put a photo on their online dating profile, and they’re cuddling another man in it. How many other men do they think will find that attractive. Single men will not take the time to join an online dating service to then click on a photo that has a picture of a women enjoying herself with another man.

Another not-so-good idea is to put something else in your photo space instead of you. You get puppies, kittens and well known actresses. Puppies and kittens are cute but that won’t make someone want to get in contact with you. Even more so if the photo next to yours has an attractive lady for the single man to click on.

Seeing only a small part of your face won’t help you either. You see lots of photos where it looks like the bottom has been cut off. Sometimes you might even just see a single woman’s left eye, or just their eyes and forehead.

Some single women will upload a photo with their face blurred out or just missing. Men don’t find this attractive. All they will ask is, why aren’t they showing there face? There can only be a few reasons for this, and none of them will be good.

A small collage of someone’s favorite photos gets used sometimes. So they have 5 or 6 photos in their 2 inch square profile photo space that no one can see properly. Only they will know why they didn’t upload them all separately. And they’re the only ones that don’t know why they’re not getting any e-mails.

A group photo is another classic mistake. How does anyone know who the single women is if there is more than one person in the photo. Some have 5 or 6 women and men in the photo.

And last but not least is the single woman you takes a photo of herself in the mirror. Then uploads her new photo of a body with a big flash as her head.

If you’re a single woman using an online dating service for the first time try and not make any of these mistakes. If you upload a nice clear photo of only you from at the very most waist up you will get far more clicks on your profile. It doesn’t matter how attractive you are or feel you are, there will always be someone that is attracted to you. Providing they can see you.

Generating Internet Income? Utilise These Great Free Webmaster Tools

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

When looking for free webmaster tools, my advice to you is to be sure that you are using tools from a reputable site or, more importantly, if you are downloading software be very careful that the download does not contain adware and spyware or viruses for that matter!

On that note let’s start off with the free software that you can use to protect your computer, because if that is not running well you will not be able to run you online business successfully. Windows Defender from Microsoft is great at scanning your computer for unwanted software. The free version of AVG Anti-Virus as well as Ad-Aware SE and Spybot are great at keeping your computer free of viruses and other undesirables! The free version of ZoneAlarm has many great attributes. Just a word of warning if you are running AVG anti-virus, ZoneAlarm will not detect that you have anti-virus protection, so do not be alarmed, it is just that ZoneAlarm has not been programmed to look for AVG. The one program I did purchase was ProcessGuard, which amongst other things protects my computer from keyboard loggers, protects the physical memory, blocks global hooks, blocks rootkit/driver/service installation and registry DLL injection. These programs all run harmoniously on my computer and so far I have managed to keep out all the dangerous and unwanted intruders.

Now on to the more exciting free webmaster tools, that will greatly assist you in the running of your online business.

Google Alerts can really add excitement to your day. If you set up a Google alert for the name of your affiliate program/s, Google will advise you by email when a new page appears on Google with these search terms and you can view the page and see if it is an opportunity to recruit an affiliate. Sometimes the new page can be a forum post asking for opinions on the affiliate program. This gives you the opportunity to add your opinion with your affiliate link of course in the signature file.

You can also set up a Google alert for your own name. This throws up some really exciting results as you can see when someone has clicked on your profile in an Article Directory or clicked on your articles as well as where people have clicked to find out what other articles you have written. This is definitely worth trying as I am sure you will be both surprised and amazed at what comes up!

Google Webmaster Tools, previously known as Google Sitemaps is so useful in that you are able to let Google know when you have updated your site. The sitemap enables Google to crawl your site better and ensures that the most current pages of your site are indexed quickly. You can just create a sitemap upload it to the same directory as your .index files and in the Google Webmaster Tools under Add a Sitemap you just type in or paste the url of your new sitemap. Google also give you reports on their latest crawl of your site and notifies you of errors, as well as give you details and positioning of your keywords. There is also other really useful information available.

Google Analytics is an amazing free service where you can see exactly where your visitors came from both geographically and through which entry page, what keywords they used, where they exited your site, etc. You will have to give this one a try for yourself as there is just so much useful information for the webmaster which enables you to fine tune your marketing and promotion strategies.

StatCounter offers a free version which I use on my site and I keep it invisible, as I believe it to be more professional, but this free service also provides incredibly detailed information about your visitors, which is extremely useful. It also records your page loads, unique visitors, first time visitors and returning visitors. It is easy to install and with this powerful little tool you can check to see that visitors to your site are increasing daily.

Online Link Popularity Tools and Back Link checkers are easily available online and enable you to monitor your link popularity and back links on a regular basis. Writing and publishing articles regularly is a great way to see your back links increase on a daily basis.

These are only a handful of the free tools that I do use to assist me with my online home business. There are many more really useful tools provided by Google as well as other reputable sites, it is just a matter of finding what suits you and your business.

As traffic is the key to generating income from the web, these tools that I have mentioned assist me in closely monitoring where my traffic is coming from and what keywords are being used.

Cynthia Minnaar works from home online and invites you to visit http://www.cyns-home-biz.com for ways to generate income online. Visit http://www.cyns-home-biz.com/pips.html to start your own web income generating website complete with 400 day pre-written email autoresponder campaign.

The Adverse Effects Of Technology - Part II

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

My earlier article entitled “Adverse Effect of Technology” resulted in an avalanche of e-mail from readers, all predominantly favorable. In that article I put forth an observation that “As the use of technology increases, social skills decreases.” I want to take this concept a little further herein.

Before we had computers and the sophisticated communication devices we now have in the work place, there was a lot of manual processing involved. Orders were processed manually, as were shipments, financial transactions, and many other business processes. All involved considerable paperwork with documents, reports, journals, logs, spreadsheets, etc. We of course used the latest technology of the day which included such things as typewriters, adding machines, filing systems, cash registers, and tabulating equipment. Nonetheless, the emphasis was on manual processing which meant we were forced to work together, like it or not, hence the need for better interpersonal communications. In other words, out of sheer necessity we were forced to socialize in order for the company to function properly. Since the business processes were so laborious, companies would worry about losing time on a task, hence the need for long range planning.

Today, electronic automation is used to implement just about every business process in a company. The idea of operating without computer support or electronic communications is unimaginable. True, such devices have been able to expedite the processes, but in doing so people no longer have to interact in order to fulfill their jobs, hence the breakdown in interpersonal communications. And because our tasks are not as laborious as they once were, the technology allows us to make changes on the fly. Consequently, long range planning has been sacrificed and reactionary management practices have taken their place. In reality, long range planning is still very much needed in order to remain competitive in a world economy, but this is not the mindset in today’s corporate cultures anymore.

As I mentioned in my article, we have developed an overt dependency on our technology which results in three areas of concern: first, that a company comes to a standstill when the power is disrupted (we can no longer perform the business processes); second, it tends to emphasize short-term planning as opposed to long range (whereby we are content to perform small tasks), and; third, basic interpersonal relations are negatively affected because we are no longer forced to interact with others.

Again, I am most definitely not anti-technology, but neither am I anti-human socialization. If I have learned anything in the 30+ years of experience in the information systems industry, it is that people matter most of all; that it is people who use information, not technology; that projects and business processes are executed by human-beings, not robots; that it is the human-being which is of paramount importance in everything.

I have always found it rather easy to teach people technology, In fact, it is relatively easy to program a person to use a particular device. But it is much more difficult to teach them the socialization skills to effectively interact with others. This is why our corporate slogan remains, “Software for the finest computer - the Mind.”

If you would like to discuss this with me in more depth, please do not hesitate to send me an e-mail.
